What is elder abuse?

Elder abuse is the mistreatment of an older person. The person who does it may be a caregiver, a family member, a spouse, or a friend.

Form of abuse or violence

  • Physical:
    • Act of violence such as hitting, kicking, pushing, beating, etc.
  • Forced sexual contact or sexual contact without consent:
    • Unwanted touching and all types of sexual assault
  • Emotional or psychological abuse:
    • Name-calling, uttering threats, intimidation, or humiliation.
  • Neglect:
    • Not providing food, clothing, or personal shelter.
    • Not paying nursing home or assisted-living costs if he or she is legally responsible to do so.
  • Abandonment:
    • This includes deserting an older person when you are legally responsible to do so.
  • Illegal or improper use of an older person’s fund, property, or assets:
    • Forging an older person’s signature
    • Stealing money or possessions

What should I do if someone I know is a victim of Elder Abuse?

  • If they are in immediate danger, dial 9-1-1
  • For non-emergency cases, check out the website to see where to report
  • Contact community victim services

Seniors Abuse and Information Line (SAIL)

  • The Seniors Abuse and Information Line (SAIL) provides a secure and confidential space where older adults and their caregivers can discuss situations of abuse or mistreatment they may be experiencing, or seek information regarding elder abuse prevention.
